My topic is the Guatemalan coup. This topic is interesting because it involves The United Fruit Company, which one wouldn’t think is involved in a huge government Coup. I think a huge part of the Guatemalan Coup is the effect it had on Guatemalan civilians and not just the American citizens. Most of the research I have found is in regard to the effect it had on the Government, but not on individual working-class citizens. My project and research works to fill in the gaps missed in the Guatemalan history in a US context. While lots of research is gathered on why The United Fruit Company was involved, for land and economic purposes, and for the destruction of the dictator, Jorge Ubico and Government, there is little research on the effect of the people. My primary sources are consisting of translated documents of Guatemalan people and historians of the time. Other sources include government documents, newspapers of the time, reports from the people, and legal documents. My project brings to light the effects that resided for the Guatemalan people after the overthrow involving the United Fruit Company and the CIA of dictator Jorge Ubico.
