The Status of Forces Agreement is a government document created in 2020, presents an agreement between the US and Guatemala on having US personnel and non-Guatemalan Companies and firms as well as their employees on having ship visits, training, exercises, humanitarian activities, and other activities as agreed between governments.
The historical context of this document is that throughout history we didn’t see lots of military negotiation from Guatemala until recently in 1944, leading to the dictatorship of Arbenz. This article is fairly neutral to the point of view, as it is a government document. This is historically important as this shows Guatemala’s progress in being independent as a military force, as they are negotiating with the United States. There is lots of power in Guatemala as allies. This relates to my project, as I am using it as a benchmark to show how far Guatemala has come as a military power.
“The Embassy proposes that aircraft, vessels, and vehicles operated by or, at the time, exclusively for the U.S. Department of Defense may enter, exit, and move freely within the territory ofthe Republic of Guatemala, and that such vehicles (whether self-propelled or towed) shall not be subject to the payment of overland transit tolls. Vessels and aircraft owned or operated by
or, at the time, exclusively for the U.S. Department of Defense shall not be subject to the payment of landing, parking, or port fees, pilotage charges,
lighterage, and harbor dues at facilities owned and operated by the Government of the Republic of Guatemala.”
